Health Insurer CZ selects hospitals on their performance

Health Insurer CZ has announced that as from January 1st she will no longer contract breast cancer care in hospitals that perform poorly in this area. Totally sixty hospitals are involved. CZ totally has 3,3 millon insured and is the third health insurer in the Netherlands.

Soon the insurer will publish a list with the performance of hospitals in the field of care for breast cancer patients. Four hospitals will receive the predicate very well, seventeen provide good care and about sixty provide reasonable care. CZ is taken into account how often a hospital performs a certain treatment (volume) and how often a treatment has to be repeated. NRC Handelsblad 27 september 2010

Professionals actually performing these treatments need this kind of information prior to others. Techniques develop quickly. The health insurer has access to figures and data of all other hospitals, where health professionals do not. With Pi® Cancer Care Scorecard the mentioned indicators are shown to doctors, compared to the numbers of other hospitals. Besides the indicators mentioned professionals will be able to see differences in opation techniques (for mamma care for example mastectomy versus breast saving), waiting- and completion time, complications and average length of stay.
